Protect your eyes from the sun!
When it comes to protecting yourself from the sun, it’s not just your skin that you need to worry about. It’s also your eyes. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun can cause cataracts and macular degeneration years after exposure. Sunglasses are not just a fashion statement, but they are a way to block harmful UV rays that can cause permanent damage to eyes in the form of cataracts, pterygium, and possibly macular degeneration.
Attention all athletes!
The America Optometric Association (AOA) urges even casual athletes to protect their sight by keeping street eyewear off the playing field. This is because conventional frames and lenses do not meet the minimum requirements for impact resistance in most sports, whereas sports-protective eyewear is tested to meet rigid standards. Also, because all sports have different visual demands, Visioncare Associates can recommend the proper eyeglasses or contact lens for a patient, or design a vision-therapy program to maximize visual skills for a specific sport.
Contact Lens Safety
Proper care and hygiene are vital to the safe wear of contact lenses. Because the cornea needs oxygen, and all contact lenses block its transmission to some degree, all contacts have the increased risk of causing infection, no matter what type. Therefore, proper cleaning is essential. Use caution with multipurpose no-rub solutions and keep lenses, the solutions, and the storage cases in a clean, dry environment. Also, never share lenses with friends or relatives. Most importantly, contact lens wearers who experience discomfort while wearing the lenses should remove them, and call the office at (310) 271-3937, particularly if there is any pain, redness, decreased vision, or light sensitivity.
