Dry Eye Treatment

What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye, also known as dry eye syndrome, is a common complaint caused by a lack of eye lubrication. Dry eye may be further characterized depending on the part of the eye affected.

• Keratitis sicca: dryness and irritation that affects the cornea

• Keratoconjunctivitis sicca: dryness that affects the cornea and conjunctiva

• Dysfunctional tear syndrome: inadequate production of quality tears

With the increased use of electronic devices, dry eyes may be more prevalent than ever before.

What Causes Dry Eye?

Dry eyes may be caused by a problem with the components of your tears or a problem with tear production. Other possible causes include:

• Prolonged staring at a computer screen
• Age
• Smoking
• Frequent flying
• Contact lens use

Dr. Shily performs a thorough examination to determine the cause of your dry eyes. Knowing the cause helps Dr. Shily develop the most effective treatment plan.

What Are the Symptoms of Dry Eye?

Symptoms of dry eye vary and can be mild to severe. Common symptoms include:

• Eye irritation
• Blurred vision
• Burning sensation
• Sensitivity to light
• Red eyes
• Sore or tired eyes

You may also feel as though you have sand or grit in your eye.

In addition to the symptoms you feel, dry eyes can also lead to inflammation of the eye, which can lead to permanent scarring.

How Is Dry Eye Treated?

Dr. Shily will develop an individualized treatment plan based on the cause of your dry eyes to help relieve your symptoms. He often recommends the use of a topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent to help reduce discomfort and inflammation.

You may also benefit from the use of artificial tears, as well as a few at-home techniques to help reduce dry eyes, such as:

• Blinking more frequently

• Taking breaks from the computer screen

• Cleaning your eyelids

• Taking off your eye makeup before you go to bed

• Wearing sunglasses that block ultraviolet rays

• Hot compresses

• Nutritional supplements

• Scleral contact lens

If conservative treatments fail to improve your dry eyes, you may need a special procedure to increase tear production.
